Nursing

Nurse Practitioner

A nurse practitioner is a nurse who has received a graduate nursing degree and has been trained in providing preventive and medical health care to individuals and families, either independently or with a physician. The nurse practitioner provides health screening and physical examinations, orders laboratory tests, and prescribes specific medications. Nurse practitioners also educate patients about staying healthy. They often work with special populations such as the rural poor, migrant farm workers, elderly persons, and children. In communities or medical facilities with few physicians, nurse practitioners are especially important as providers of primary health care.

Specialization

Nurse practitioners can specialize in family care, geriatrics (care of the elderly), adult health, pediatrics (children), women’s health, or mental health.

Environment

Nurse practitioners work in private practice or at community clinics, health departments, medical practices, hospitals, migrant health clinics, and prisons.

Prep

General college preparation is recommended. Coursework should include three math classes including algebra I, algebra II, and geometry (or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite), three science courses including one biological science, one physical science, and one lab course, four English units, and two social studies units. If available, students should take two years of a foreign language. It is recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area if available. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.

Academic

Nurse practitioners are registered nurses (RNs) with four-year baccalaureate degrees who have also completed graduate or nurse practitioner programs. The nurse practitioner program usually takes one to two years, depending on the educational institution. Graduates must then apply to the Oregon State Board of Nursing for approval to practice as a nurse practitioner.
