Biological Photographer

Biological photographer produce photographs, films, and videotapes on topics such as surgery, scientific experiments, and medical procedures. The images they produce are used in medical journals, training materials, textbooks, research reports, and other publications.

Specialization

A biological photographer may specialize in:

  • Photomicrography
  • Ophthalmic photography
  • Dental photography
  • Autopsy/specimen photography
  • Cinematography

    Environment

    Some biological photographers work on a free-lance (independent) basis. Others are employed by hospitals, medical schools, museums, libraries, colleges and universities, medical and pharmaceutical companies, advertising agencies, and research facilities.

    Prep

    A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses or experience in art, biology, chemistry, humanities, journalism, photography, and mathematics are recommended.

    Academic

    Biological photographers should have two to four years of training after high school. Certification and registration are available through the BioCommunications Association's Board of Registry formerly the Board of Registry of the Biological Photographic Association.
