Medical Interpreter

A medical interpreter is at least bilingual and bicultural. He or she has taken and passed a minimum of a three-month course, including medical terminology and basic health and illness. This individual translates between patients and health care professionals. The medical interpreter often interprets for new immigrants or refugees who do not have the language or background to understand medical information.

Environment

Medical interpreters can be involved in every aspect of the medical setting such as surgery, labor and delivery, trauma and emergency cases, and mental health.

Prep

A high school diploma or equivalent is required, preferably with two to three years of studying a second language

Academic

A high school diploma is required, with a college degree being preferred by many employers. Medical interpreters must complete a three-month medical terminology course or its equivalent. Many institutions require both written and oral communication in English and the second language.
