Health Information and Communication
Medical Record Administrator
The medical record is a permanent document prepared for each patient at a health care facility. It contains all the background information on a patient’s care. Maintaining these records is very important because the information is used to evaluate patient care, diagnose and treat illnesses, and plan future health care. Health information administrators (also known as medical record administrators) manage health information systems in hospitals, government agencies, long-term care facilities, and private industry. They design and manage health information systems to meet medical, legal and ethical standards, and supervise other personnel who prepare medical records.
Environment
Medical record administrators work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, insurance companies, governmental agencies, educational institutions, and private industry.
Prep
General college preparation is recommended. Coursework should include three math classes including algebra I, algebra II, and geometry (or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite), three science courses including one biological science, one physical science, and one lab course, four English units, and two social studies units. If available, students should take two years of a foreign language. It is recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area if available. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.
Academic
A bachelor’s degree is required in medical record administration from a college or university accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Coursework includes medical terminology, medical care organization, and administration/supervision, statistics, principles of health law, and computerized health information systems. Individuals who already have a college degree with prerequisite courses can earn a postgraduate certificate in health information administration. Graduates from either a degree or certificate program are eligible for the national registration examination offered by the American Health Information Management Association, to become a registered record administrator.
