Medical and scientific writers research, organize, write, and edit scientific and technical material. This includes reports, proposals, speeches, articles for scientific journals, and instruction manuals. These writers may translate technical language into terms that are easier to understand or they may write in highly technical terms for experts. Medical and scientific writers gather information by researching a subject, interviewing experts, and observing procedures. They also select photos, charts, diagrams, or illustratons. Environment Medical and scientific writers may work in a publications office of a medical center, private company, or educational institution. Some work on a free-lance (independent) basis. Prep General college preparation is recommended. Coursework should include three math classes including algebra I, algebra II, and geometry (or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite), three science courses including one biological science, one physical science, and one lab course, four English units, and two social studies units. If available, students should take two years of a foreign language. Academic Medical and scientific writers should have a background in the fields in which they are working. Most earn at least a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or educational media with a minor emphasis in the sciences.
