Ophthalmic Laboratory Technician
Ophthalmic laboratory technicians make eyeglasses from a prescription provided by an ophthalmologist or optometrist. They help opticians by grinding lenses, assembling frames, and making adjustments to fit the customer’s needs.
Environment
Optical laboratory technicians are employed at retail optical stores and eye clinics operated by ophthalmologists and/or optometrists.
Prep
A high school diploma or equivalent is required and algebra is recommended. It is also recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area if available. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.
Academic
Ophthalmic laboratory technicians can be trained in programs offered by vocational-technical institutes or through on-the-job training. Coursework will include optical theory, surfacing and lens finishing, and the reading and applying of prescriptions.
