Pharmacy Technician

Pharmacy technicians work under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. They fill prescriptions and maintain the pharmacy’s stock. A pharmacy technician helps package and label medical preparations, deliver prepared mediations, order equipment and stock, and keep pharmacy equipment sterile and orderly.

Environment

Pharmacy technicians work in hospitals and retail pharmacies.

Prep

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and typing are recommended. It is recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area if available. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.

Academic

Pharmacy technicians can be trained through technical/vocational programs or community colleges. Training takes one to two years, depending on the program. It covers basic pharmacology, medical terminology, ethical and legal considerations, and organizational/clerical responsibilities.
