Physician Assistant

Physician assistants provide health care services under the direction and supervision of a physician. They can take a patient’s medical history, perform physical examinations, order lab work or x-rays, assist in surgery, apply casts, supervise technical assistants, prescribe certain medications, and counsel patients and their families on medical problems, treatments and the use of prescriptions.

Environment

Physician assistants work in a physician’s office, clinic, hospital, health maintenance organization (HMO), health department, and the military. Some work in clinics away from the direct supervision of the physician and communicate with the physician by telephone, radio, or computer.

Prep

General college preparation is recommended. Coursework should include three math classes including algebra I, algebra II, and geometry (or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite), three science courses including one biological science, one physical science, and one lab course, four English units, and two social studies units. It available, students take two years of a foreign language. It is recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.

Academic

Physician assistants must complete a course of study which has been approved and accredited by the Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation of the American Medical Association. Two-year programs generally follow two or three years of undergraduate preparation or a bachelor’s degree. Four-year programs are combined with a baccalaureate degree program. The course of study includes science instruction as well as supervised practice. Physician assistants must pass an examination given by the National Commission for Certification of Physician Assistants. Finally, they must apply to the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners for registration to practice in the state.
