Mental and Social Health
Psychologist
Psychologists study the behavior, emotions, and thinking processes of humans and animals to better understand their behavior. Clinical psychologists work directly with patients using diagnostic tests and intervention techniques to help them address their problems. Psychologists may teach, conduct research, or work as consultants or therapists.
Specialization
There are many areas of specialization in psychology, including:
Clinical psychology
Counseling psychology
Developmental psychology
Educational/school psychology
Health psychology
Industrial-organizational psychology
Neuropsychology
Social psychology
Environment
Psychologists may work alone or with other specialists in hospitals, correctional institutions, mental health clinics, private practice, schools, businesses, government agencies, and research laboratories.
Prep
General college preparation is recommended. Coursework should include three math classes including algebra I, algebra II, and geometry (or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite), three science courses including one biological science, one physical science, and one lab course, four English units, and two social studies units. If available, students should take two years of a foreign language. It is recommended that a student should be enrolled in a health services endorsement area if available. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.
Academic
School psychologists and some community mental health psychologists hold at least a master’s degree in psychology. However, to become licensed as a psychologist, you must have a doctorate in psychology. Most doctoral programs in psychology and clinical psychology involve four to five years of study after receiving a bachelor’s degree. One year of internship is required during the doctoral program in clinical psychology. Two years of supervised post-doctoral experience are required for licensure in Oregon. Psychologists must pass an examination by the Oregon Board of Psychologist Examiners.
