Respiratory Therapist/Therapy Technician
Respiratory therapists and respiratory therapy technicians perform diagnostic tests and treat patients with heart and breathing problems. These problems may be caused by emphysema, asthma, pneumonia, heart failure, chest injuries, or other conditions. The respiratory therapists knows about the health problems requiring respiratory care and is trained to perform tests and treatments under the physician’s supervision. A respiratory therapy technician is trained to administered specific treatments under the supervision of a respiratory therapist and/or physician.
Environment
Respiratory care personnel work at hospitals, nursing care facilities, clinics, home care agencies, educational facilities, research centers, private industry, and special medical services.
Prep
A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Courses in algebra, biology, and chemistry are recommended. It is also recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area if available. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.
Academic
Most employers prefer to hire respiratory therapists and respiratory therapy technicians who have earned their credentials. To do this, you must complete a training program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. The training for respiratory therapists is usually two years, culminating in an associate degree. Graduates of the two-year programs are eligible for the examination for registered respiratory therapists (RRT). Technicians usually receive one year of training and may take the examination for certified respiratory therapy technician (CRTT). Both credentials are awarded by the National Board for Respiratory Care. In Oregon, respiratory care practitioners must be licensed by the Oregon Board of Medical Examiners.
