Mental and Social Health
Social Worker
Social workers help people deal with problems such as poverty, poor housing, illness, drug abuse, and child and spouse abuse. They interview individuals, families, and community groups to find out what their specific needs are, then help to improve their client’s situation. Some social workers help religions, civic, business, and union organizations address social problems and help people find jobs or housing. Other social workers provide counseling to individuals, families, or other groups. Health care social workers are part of a team that includes physicians, nurses, and therapists.
Specialization
Social workers may specialize in clinical work, group work, community organization, administration, or a combination of these. They may focus on substance abuse, health, mental health, geriatrics, or family and children’s services.
Environment
Social workers are employed in private and public social agencies, schools, prisons, reformatories, courts of law, and private practice. Health care and mental health social workers work in hospitals, home health agencies, nursing homes, hospices, mental health clinics, and substance abuse centers.
Prep
General college preparation is recommended. Coursework should include three math classes including algebra I, algebra II, and geometry (or a higher level math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite), three science courses including one biological science, one physical science, and one lab course, four English units, and two social studies units. If available, students should take two years of a foreign language. It is recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.

He or she must submit recommendations and pass an examination for certification as a: certified social worker, certified master social worker, certified clinical social worker or certified social work manager.
