Specialist in Blood Bank Technology
Specialists in blood bank technology perform and supervise routine and specialized tests in blood banks and blood collection centers. Their duties include: 1) identifying blood types and antibodies; 2) screening for transfusion-transmitted viruses; 3) investigating adverse responses to transfusion; 4) supervising the collection, separation, delivery, and storage of blood components; and 5) supporting physicians and nurses in blood transfusion therapy. The blood bank technology specialist's training enables him or her to perform specialized tests, such as those dealing with the study of blood and its immunities (immunohematology).
Environment
Blood bank technologists work primarily in hospitals, community blood banks, transfusion centers, and laboratories.
Prep
General college preparation is recommended. Coursework should include three math classes including algebra I, algebra II and geometry, (or a higher level of math course for which algebra II is a prerequisite), three science courses including one biological science, one physical science, and one lab course, four English units, and two social studies units. If available, students should take two years of a foreign language. It is recommended that a student be enrolled in a health services endorsement area if available. This is defined as a broad course of study that allows students to explore career opportunities and apply academic knowledge and skills in health services.
Academic
Specialists in blood bank technology must have a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university with a major in any of the biological or physical sciences. Most specialists in blood bank technology programs are 12 months conducted in hospitals or community blood centers or universities, and consist of didactic sessions combined with practical work. Specialists in Blood Bank Technology (SBB) Programs offer education on a wide variety of subjects including genetics, immunology, blood groups, collection and storage of blood and components, donor processing, immune mechanisms, component therapy, transfusion of the newborn, complications of transfusion, general administration, personnel administration, education and automated data processing. Specialist in Blood Banking Technology (SBB) Programs need to be accredited by the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) in collaboration with the Committee on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs, Certification Programs Specialist in Blood Banking (SBB). and Blood Banker (BB) Certification are available through the AABB. The certification exam is cosponsored by the AABB and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists Board of Registry. Upon successful completion of an accredited SBB Program, students may apply to take the Board of Registry SBB Certification Examination to become certified as a Specialist in Blood Banking Technology (SBB). This examination is offered by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Registry (BOR) in collaboration with the AABB.
