Medical Careers

The practice of medicine dates back many centuries. Today’s medical careers are far more complex and specialized than early physicians could have imagined, offering more options than ever in medical practice. It is still possible to be a family practitioner in a rural area, providing health care for patients of all ages. On the other hand, a physician today may be a specialist in a major medical center, conducting research on a specific disease. Most physicians are somewhere in between, caring for patients in private or group practice. The field of medicine has expanded so widely and the demand for services is so great that supporting medical professions have developed. These include physician assistants (covered in this section), nurse practitioners (covered in the “Nursing” section), and podiatrists (in this section).
