Mental and Social Health

Mental health professionals are concerned with the psychological, emotional, and social health of individuals and groups. They work with people who have family and life problems, traumatic experiences, drug or alcohol addictions, developmental disabilities, and serious behavioral or psychological disorders. Psychologists, social workers, and counselors are all mental health professionals. They work with others in the field as well as community agencies and the courts to provide services for clients and patients. Mental health professionals also work with the families of clients to involve them in treating and preventing mental problems. Training for mental health professions varies, but it usually requires advanced degrees (master’s or doctoral). Mental health offers many opportunities for specialization, research, and teaching in a variety of settings.
