Science and Engineering

The fields of science and engineering are closely related to medicine. Many scientists work in the health field to detect, control, or prevent disease, and protect the environment. New drugs, methods, equipment, and technology can improve medical treatment and help prevent disease. Medical research scientists conduct research on biological systems in order to understand the causes of and to discover treatments for disease and other health problems. As a member of the occupational safety team, industrial hygienists recognize, evaluate, and control environmental factors that affect the safety and health of workers. Biomedical engineers combine their knowledge of medicine and engineering to provide materials, tools, and techniques to help health care professionals diagnose and treat disease. Biomedical equipment technicians apply their technical skills to the installation or repair of health care equipment. Finally, health physicists examine the effects of radiation on living things. They also study potential health hazards such as radioactive waste and indoor radon.
